Leaking Underground Storage Tank

Client: Ellingwood Construction Company
Sector: Construction
Location: Framingham, MA
Service: Pollution Assessment & Remediation

The Challenge:

framingham-ma-ellingwood-pollutionUnderground gasoline and diesel fuel storage tanks, operated by a regional construction company, leaked and polluted soil and groundwater. The storage tanks were located in an aquifer protection district.

The Environmental Services Provided:

SAK served as the environmental consultant for response actions under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan up to Phase IV. The compromised tanks and 90 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed. A monitored natural attenuation program was allowed as a feasible remedial action alternative under a 2007 amendment to the MCP (310 CMR 40.0924), because the site was located more than 1,000 feet from the public water supply wellhead.

SAK performed quarterly groundwater monitoring for 2 years on 7 monitoring wells. Water quality trends were statically evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U Test and determined that trends were significant.

Summary of Services:

  • Site Remediation
  • MCP Compliance
  • Groundwater Remediation
  • UST Removal

The Result:

SAK developed a groundwater monitoring program with the end in mind, so that the data would be useful for risk characterization and statistical evaluation. A Class A-2 RAO was achieved to close out the project.
