For most K-12 school districts, summer is the narrow window of time to complete projects in time for the new school year. The Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School planned to replace seating in their 30,000 SF auditorium. According to the facility’s Asbestos Management Plan, the tile and mastic covering the flooring beneath the seats contained asbestos.
The Environmental Services Provided:
SAK was retained to provide asbestos consulting services to assist in the project. The objective was to determine the need for excessive abatement and keep the improvement project on track. SAK’s licensed professionals developed an innovative procedure to allow the seating contractor to remove the auditorium seats without disturbing the underlying tile. A detailed work procedure was prepared where special tools and sequences would shear the top of the lag bolts securing the seats to the floor, without contacting the tile. A protective wood template was required to fit around the foot of each seat and protect the flooring. The Plan included “stop work” conditions in the event tile was scratched or broken.
