Air Emissions Permitting

Client: DePuy Inc.
Sector: Industrial
Location: Raynham, MA
Service: Permitting & Compliance

The Challenge:

raynham-ma-depuy-industrial-permittingDePuy is the leading developer and manufacturer of orthopedic sports medicine products and soft tissue repair devices. An internal audit by their EHS staff revealed the need for an air permit evaluation for air emissions from their manufacturing operations.

The Environmental Services Provided:

SAK’s work included a comprehensive review of DePuy’s manufacturing operations to understand all potential air emitting sources and amounts. Operations included molding, grinding, and cleaning. It was determined that a new emission permit was required which SAK revealed to MADEP under their Self-Disclosure Policy. SAK’s work included quantification of actual and potential emissions from current and anticipated manufacturing activity. This was built upon a detailed inventory of chemical use, analysis of each chemical from Material Safety Data Sheets, identification of SOx, NOx, particulates, VOCs, and HAPS emission amounts.

The application included site location map, descriptions of process equipment, current facility potential and actual emissions, roof and floor plans, exhaust stack details, standard operating and maintenance procedures, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s) or Certified Product Data Sheet (CPDS). SAK held a pre-application with MADEP and negotiated permit terms and conditions on behalf of DePuy.

Finally, because Massachusetts does not have delegated authority to implement federal programs, SAK reviewed potentially applicable rules to determine the client’s obligations with respect to federal programs.
