A biotechnology company is leaving their leased facilities after several years of laboratory work with various cell types and chemical compounds. A comprehensive assessment and testing is often required to make sure the facility is left clean without traces of potential contaminants. SAK Environmental has been working with biotechnology clients, like Life Technologies, to assist them in ensuring a clean facility is left behind.
At a recent facility assessment and decommissioning project in Beverly, MA, the Life Technology facilities were assessed with a new on-site rapid assessment tool, eliminating the need to take wipe samples and send samples to an off-site laboratory.
An Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) test kit was used to evaluate effectiveness of the disinfection step. The test kit works by measuring the quantity of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) on surfaces after disinfection. Bleach will destroy ATP which is an enzyme present in all living cells. The residual ATP left after bleaching is an indicator of how well a surface was disinfected.
Proper oversight and documentation by SAK Environmental field staff and certification by a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) ensures Life Technologies vacates a clean facility.
